Retired U.S. Marine Corps General David H. Berger is a native of Woodbine, Maryland and a 1981 graduate of Tulane University. He retired in 2023 having served four years as the 38th Commandant of the Marine Corps.


Over the span of his 42 years of military service, he commanded at every level and served multiple combat tours to include Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He also participated in numerous peacekeeping efforts to include Kosovo and Haiti, and numerous humanitarian relief efforts in the Pacific. The Force Design effort he initiated as Commandant continues today as the essential framework for modernization and innovation within the Marine Corps.


Berger is a Senior Fellow at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory and serves as a mentor to the Defense Science Studies Group. He serves on the Board of the Woody Williams Foundation, which supports Gold Star families and promotes education awareness in the American public about Gold Star Families and the sacrifices they have made.
