John enlisted in the Army during his senior year of high school. Being in the military was a good fit for him, but he wanted to be an officer. So he applied to, received a nomination for, and gained admission to the United States Military Academy at West Point, Class of 2008. However, he chose to deploy with his unit and put West Point on hold for a year. The combat vet became a cadet and graduated in 2009.
