Luke was the youngest of 3 children and the only boy. He knew from a young age that he wanted to continue the family legacy of serving in the military. He was injured when his petroleum fuel tanker hit an IED on 2 Jan 04. He was burned on 95% of his body. He died on 5 Jan 04, 3 months before his reserve unit returned from their deployment.
Luke fulfilled a childhood goal when he joined the military during his senior year of high school in December 2000. He chose the Army Reserves and the USAR 209th QMCo in Lafayette, Indiana where he was a petroleum specialist. His unit was mobilized in February of 2003, arriving in Iraq in May.
On 2 January 2004, his fuel tanker was part of a convoy. The truck he was riding in hit an IED and was hit by an RPG. Luke received 3rd degree burns over 90% of his body. He passed away two days later at Brooke Army Medical Center.
He is survived by his parents and two sisters. Luke had continued a family military legacy that goes back to the Revolutionary War.
