LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – The Gold Star Family Monument was unveiled Wednesday in Lawton.
After a three-year-long process with more than $30,000 raised, Gold Star Families have a place they can go to in Elmer Thomas Park to remember their loved ones.
While there are other monuments for Gold Star Families in the form of highways, buildings and more, these families worked hard to get this monument built for a very good reason.
“We did not have a place where the Gold Star Family members could just sit, reflect and spend some time with their loved one in remembrance,” explained Honorary Committee Member, Brenda Spencer-Ragland.
In addition to the unveiling, there were remarks from Garrison Commander, Col. Peay as well as a band performance of the National Anthem from the 77th Army Band.
